About the Department

The Department of Physics was established in the year 1964 by the visionary Prof. S.R.Govindarajan. Three teachers from this Department served as Principal of our college - Shri S.R.Govindarajan, Shri C.Rangarajan,  Dr.B.Krishnan and contributed to the growth of the institution immensely. This Department has a always been unique among the city colleges for nurturing skills along with academics, through its Astronomy club and Photography club in yesteryears and currently through its Triple Helix club (affiliated to VIGYAR PRASAR under DST, Govt. of India )and STEM activities. Currently our department has been popularizing Foldscope , an innovation of Stanford University through DBT Foldscope project.

The Department has always had a legacy of having great teachers Dr.S.Srinivasan, Prof.R.Ananthan, Prof.A.Ramaswamy, Prof.G.Ramamurthi, Prof.Mathrubutham,  who inspired students, took them into their folds through their absorbing lectures, interactions and this legacy continues. The Department has a well equipped lab, excellent teaching staff and lab assistants provides excellent facilities with a student friendly environment for the undergraduates to work individually as well be part of groups. This gives each student the courage to hone her/his abilities, work habits and traits to evolve into graduates equipped with 21st Century skills. With the prestigious DBT STAR College Support Scheme, MHRD, Govt. of India, this department has been an exemplary in imparting hands-on skills, trainings in collaboration with various research institutes, government agriculture department, forest department, museum and many other private institutes of excellence in research. With its strong belief in trans-disciplinary approach, it constantly breaks the barriers and has introduced Microbiology Laboratory Techniques, Hands–on training in biochemical techniques for Physics Students which have become a part of our curriculum. We are actively involved in Popularization of Science through STEM activities to various Chennai Corporation schools and other schools.

More about our Hands-on STEM Activities

Interdisciplinary projects gives students wonderful opportunity to learn Science and for the past five years many of the undergraduates have been presenting their research findings in National and International Conferences, which is a very unique feature of this department. In the last decade, it has become a routine for our students to get admission in M.Sc. in Medical Physics, Materials Science and many of them into M.Sc. Physics in prestigious institutions, later to pursue research or take up teaching as their passionate career. Students get excellent knowledge through academics and exposure about various agencies, opportunities through interactions with Scientists, alumni, researchers, teachers, motivational speakers. This combined with varieties of outreach activities and extension activities in STEM gives them enough strength to create road map for their future - be a teacher, researcher, software professional, web designer, Science YouTuber, science communicator, STEM trainer, translator, innovator, eduprenuer, citizen science leader or take up any profession that needs critical thinking, inquiry, collaboration and problem solving which are the key attributes of this subject. Students are encouraged to learn also through MOOCs and take up interdisciplinary courses by awarding extra credits. Our alumni have been playing a great role in handholding many of our students, as beneficiaries of this kind of evolving classrooms. This department has a huge collection of books in the library under Science communication, popularization of Science published by CSIR, TIFR, Vigyan Prasar and private publishers in English and Tamil which immensely helps students to build their technical knowledge in their mother tongue. This has led to many students getting selected every year to various summer and winter internships/ workshops at prestigious research institutes of the Government. Students take part in various inter-collegiate technical fests, robotics, physics or STEM based activities and bring laurels to our department. In the last decade, the Department has evolved as the most sought after collaborator for school teachers/ children trainings, science outreach and science communication activities. With well qualified passionate teachers, the Department has been buzzing constantly with research activities, trainings, workshops, as we are moving towards activities based pedagogy providing experiential learning than rote. This has helped our students themselves publish translation works and Tamil dubbings for nearly 300 science videos. The Department updates the syllabus time to time, encourages online learning and imparts multidisciplinary approach and provides opportunities for every individual to rise up. ------------

ACTIVITY 1  -   Virtual Courseware Project

The Virtual Courseware Project by California State University produces interactive, online simulations for the life science laboratory or for earth science field studies. All the students of II B.Sc. Physics and I B.Sc. Physics took part in this online learning on05/07/2018. Each of them took part in this activity to apply their knowledge – to collect data, estimate, analyse, improvise, calculate, compare and find the result. Upon completion of this activity successfully our students were given the opportunity to receive a personalized Certificate as a "Virtual Seismologist" from the California State University.

ACTIVITY 2 - Mission: Starlight – Global Expt.

Under the Science Club - Triple Helix, the Department of Physics organised one of such global experimental session-Mission: Starlight, for I B.Sc. Mathematics students. The first year under graduate maths students (62) who learn physics as allied subject in their curriculum and as an interdisciplinary activity, they did this global experiment in the physics lab on 18.07.2017, under the guidance of our teachers. Upon successful completion, they all received certificates from Royal Society of Chemistry, London. Through this activity our College Name now appears on the Royal Society of Chemistry’s website, which is a pride our students have brought through their science activity.

ACTIVITY 3 - Two day workshop on making science videos

One day Workshop for 30 students for making science videos and curate them was held twice during 4th and 17th July, 2018. Students from all the three years of Physics department underwent training under the founder CEO of Ticklinks.

ACTIVITY 4 - Meet the Toymaker Padmashri Arvind Gupta

The Science club, Triple Helix of the Department of Physics, D. G Vaishnav College organised Meet the Toymaker Padmashri Arvind Gupta on 25.07.2018. 100 school children from various government & private schools and 300 college students participated in this event. He stressed about learning through doing and making education reach everyone and on the importance of practical learning. ‘Paper, pencil, rubber band, safety pin, rubber tube, plastic straws… everyday objects gain new purpose in Arvind Gupta’s hands. He demonstrated a cardboard woodpecker toy that jiggles down a cycle spoke; folded a used tetra-pack into a wallet; showed a cardboard man pasted on an stick, who moves his arms up and down when turned. He explained various Physics principles such as projectile motion, centrifugal force using small toys and objects. School children got enthralled as Guptaji showed one toy after the other….’
