About
The history of Tamil department started from the beginning of D.G.Vaishnav College in 1964. From that day, it aimed to enrich students’ personality in Tamil language and develop theirtalents by introducing various cultural programmes, competitions. The primary focus on the writing (Iyal), music (Isai) and drama (Nadagam) which is consider as ‘Muthamizh’ and to explore the students skills, various competitions like essay writing competition, oratorical competition, debates, poetry reading sessions, musical competitions and dramas were included in ‘MuthamizhVizha’ which is celebrated every year. To appreciate the Vaishnav’s principle of seeing others suffering as themselves and also to make the students to know the Nalayira Divya Prabandham (Four thousand divine songs) which were sung by Twelve Aalwars, ‘Aalwarkal Vizha’ has been celebrated. To praise the Saiva principles, ‘Nayanmarkal Vizha’ has been celebrated. In the appreciation of the month Margazhi’s dignity and dignity of Andaal’s fasting ‘Paavai Vizha’ has been celebrated grandly on Margazhi 27th every year.

Objective

This contemporary Tamil society continuously does research on Tamil literary works and grammar to showcase the Tamil tradition, culture and integrity of Tamil language.  In aiming that, various National and International conferences have been organized to develop the research ideas in the minds of the students.

Mission

In support of the above mentioned, massive national seminar on ‘Kannan in Indian Literature’ held in 2012 and in collaboration with Chennai Kaviyarasan Mandram, a National seminar on ‘TharkalaIlakkiyangal Oru Panmugapparvai (A multi-perspective on Contemporary Literature)’ was also organized.  In 2014, a National seminar on ‘Bhakti Ilakkiyangal Oru Panmugapparvai (A Different Perspective on Bhakti Literature)’,in 2016, in collaboration with Chennai Chitthar Literary Centre and a National seminar on ‘ChittharIlakkiyangal - Panmugapparvai (A different perspective on Chitthar literature)’, In 2017, a massive International seminar on ‘Sevviyal Ilakkiyangal- Panmugapparvai (A multi-perspective on Sevviyal Literature) have been organized. Various intellectuals from different countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka participated in this seminar. In January 2018, to celebrate the 1000th birth anniversary of Ramanusar, a National seminar on ‘Panmuga Nokkil Ramanusar (A Different perspective of Ramanusar)’ specially organized. In 2018, in collaboration with Tirukkailaya Parambarai Dharumapura Aadhinam Anaithulaga Saiva Siddhantha Research Organization and Department of Saiva Siddhantha, University of Madras, on March 8, 9,10 and 11th‘Fifth International Saiva Siddhantha Conference’ was held. There were many stalwarts like Hon.Shri.Sadasivam, Governor of Kerala, Hon. Shri.Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of Tamil Nadu, Hon. Shri. O.PaneerSelvam, Deputy-Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and people from different mutts, devotees of Lord Shiva, Tamil Nadu High court Judges, University Vice-Chancellors, Saiva Siddhandha Department resource people from different countries like Canada, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Australia, London, Malaysia, America, Nigeria, South Africa, and Switzerland participated and shared their knowledge with other people. In the aim of developing the students’ knowledge in Tamil language, to instigate interest in literature and to get the proper understanding of life, ‘Ilakkiya Inbam’ a literary program has been conducted by the students for the students every month in Tamil department. We propose to convert this department in to a research department in the future.
