THE COURSEThe far sighted vision of Academicians at the University of Madras during the early 80’ s made it possible to introduce a course with a rare blend of Arts, Commerce and professional base with the nomenclature of B.A.Corporate Secretaryship. While B.Com. course was aimed at creating Chartered Accountants and Cost Accountants, this course aims to create Company Secretaries. The Focus of this course is to serve as a feeder course and give necessary exposure and experience both at theoretical and practical level for budding Company Secretaries. The Unique feature of this Course is that it has Practical training (Internship) in the name of Institutional Training as a part of the curriculum. The nomenclature of the course was changed from B.A. (Corporate Secretaryship) to BCS (Bachelor of Corporate Secretaryship) and finally settled with B.Com.,(Corporate Secretaryship).

UNIQUE ACADEMIC PRACTICES
QUESTION BANKSThe department prepares Question bank in each subject, a compendium of important questions on each topic of the syllabus. At the end of every semester, the faculties who taught the relevant subject have to suggest the improvement in the existing question bank and also they have to scrutinize the question bank for the subjects which they are going to handle for the next semester. The staff members have to do this process during the end semester holidays and send the corrected question banks to the Head of the Department for his review through e-mail. The Head of the Department will go through all the questions in the question banks and he will send these question banks along with the relevant syllabus and a compilation of past question papers to the students through Email before the reopening day and every student will be having these question banks and syllabus in their inbox of e-mail. The students are instructed to bring a hard copy of the Question banks on the re-opening day for class use.
METHOD OF CONTINUOUS STUDENT ASSESSMENTThe Department evaluates the students for Continuous Internal Assessment in its true sense. For this purpose the department employs Advance mail intimation system to send the Assignment Topics in advance. The staff of the department prepare Topics / Questions for projects / assignments and send them to the HOD and HOD will vet and verify all the assignments and send them to all the students through e-mail. Before the beginning of the semester, the assignment topics and questions are available at the in-box of every student which he can access even during midnight. The assignment topics are given well in advance (even before the first working day of the semester) so as to give the students ample time for preparation and submission. This enables the students to visit the libraries, browse in the Internet and put forth a sincere, honest and creative work and the assignments come out as a new effort to learn more information. In the process of searching for information, students understand the subject better. Every Monday is earmarked for submission of Assignments. The Assignment schedule will be sent to the students before the start of the Semester and the submission of assignments are spread evenly throughout the semester so that the students will be involved in a continuous learning process. The department also conducts Internal Assessment Tests on a regular basis. Test hours are identified in the Time table and Centralised Tests are conducted on weekly basis. For Shift I students every 3rd day order is the Test day and for the Shift-II students every 5th day order is the Test day. The Tests for internal assessment is made with the help of the question banks sent to the students through email.. This enables the students to know the focus of their study , prepare well for the test and score good marks in Internal assessment. The Test Schedule is also planned in advance and sent to the students through e-mail before the beginning of the semester. The conduct and behaviour of the students is also considered for Internal assessment and the stress for social and cultural values are given in the internal assessment to impart value based academia as focused by the vision of the college.
